Silversea’s fleet of exploration ships are the top choice for luxurious soft adventure expedition cruising, includingSilver Galapagos that sails exclusively in the Galápagos Islands. Built in 2000 with its last major refurbishment in 2011, this well-maintained ship has beautiful bones. In late 2016, Silver Shadow underwent a much-needed refreshment. Upholstery and carpeting in public areas and in the bigger suites were redone. (The swirl-patterned carpeting in passenger hallways and some public corridors adds needed pizzazz.) Parquet floors throughout the ship were refinished and gleam like new. All accommodations are suites, chock-full of amenities like Pratesi linens and Bulgari toiletries.
Dress Code on Silver Nova is Different than on Other Silversea Ships

Like most small-ship luxury lines, Silversea eschews big productions; instead, it showcases the Voices of Silversea, a few singers who perform together or solo. Most notably, sustainable top-drawer caviar, presented with all the proper accoutrements, is available complimentary, anytime, anywhere. The tiny S.A.L.T. Bar, showcasing mixologist concoctions evoking the region, seemed the buzziest. I chilled at Dolce Vita, an expansive people-watching lounge where the bartender stirred perfect martinis and lemon drops. Few ships shimmer brighter than Silver Dawn, with its you’ve arrived vibe, white gloved-butler pampering, and a novel spa concept celebrating indulgence both within the spa walls and in-suite. Next to the Panorama Lounge on Deck 8 is Connoisseur’s Corner, a cigar lounge offering a selection of Dominican and Cuban stogies and top-shelf cognacs into the wee hours (it’s also the ship’s only indoor smoking area).
Is Silversea Silver Shadow a good ship to cruise on?
The line offers a limited number of "combination cruises," where itineraries combine two or three cruises into one for in-depth regional exploration. At La Terrazza (by day, a casual buffet) the menu showcases the finest in Italian cooking, from classic favorites to Tuscan fare. Seating is limited, so reservations are a must to ensure a table—it’s one reservation you’ll be glad you took the time to book.
Silversea Cruises Reviews
The 382-passenger ship is just big enough to provide multiple lounge, dining and entertainment options, and small enough for crew to quickly learn passengers' names and preferences. In between are a whole host of beautifully appointed cabins that offer smart design and comfortable amenities. Silver Nova is the first ship in the Silversea fleet to offer aft-facing cabins, and we love that it’s not devoted just to the bigger suites – eight Premium Veranda Suites and one Classic Veranda Suite are available facing aft. Ships like Silver Spirit look more like cruise ships, with amenities that include larger pools, lounges and plentiful dining options. Expedition ships are smaller by nature and therefore have fewer onboard facilities.
I didn’t notice any, but I see that Silver Nova, the first of a new ship class debuting in August 2023, leans hard into green initiatives with advanced hybrid technology utilizing fuel cells and promise zero port emissions. These outings highlight local chefs and tastemakers, cuisine and wine. In Portomão, we boarded a small bus to Maria do Mar, a hole-in-the-wall tin fish market/restaurant, where a chef prepares flavor bombs like sardines, anchovies and mackerel on grilled bread. We devoured everything, quaffing much Portuguese white wine (vinho verde) to cheer our insider-y afternoon. Silver Dawn is typical Silversea; children are rarely seen onboard; if sailing, they lean older and well-behaved.
Silver Nova Cabins All are Spacious, Come with Butlers
Dishes from the galleys of Silversea’s master chefs are complemented by those of La Collection du Monde, created by Silversea’s culinary partner, the world-class chefs of Relais & Châteaux. Meals, drinks, entertainment and onboard special events are all part of the price. You won't find waterslides, kids clubs or roller coasters on a Silversea cruise. If you're in the market for a high-end cruise vacation, here's everything you need to know about Silversea. Daytime activities are equally subdued and include trivia contests, bridge instruction and tournaments, and shopping in the on board boutiques.
Menu
This restaurant, relatively new to Silversea, is a solid hit for good reason. Cooks don’t gussy up local dishes, keeping the soul in plates like Portuguese pan-fried salt cod on my cruise. Silversea fares include all gratuities, and additional tips are not expected. Some guests will provide a tip to their cabin attendant and butler, or to select waiters and bartenders. Others may consider a donation to the crew welfare fund, which benefits all crewmembers, including those working behind the scenes on Silver Wind.

The new S.A.L.T. Chef’s Table also comes with a big price tag for the multicourse, immersive meal. Foodies might find all three experiences worth the fee – we loved our dinner at Kaiseki and found the Chef’s Table to be innovative – but those who don’t live for food will be very happy at the ship’s included restaurants. Silver Nova also offers more traditional upscale options at its diverse variety of restaurants. Several of the restaurants do double-duty, offering one experience during the day and a different experience for dinner. Food on Silver Nova is top-notch, in no small part because of the line’s commitment to introducing and immersing its guests in local food and the way it connects to culture.
Silver Wind
Silver Shadow attracts those who think more old school than new -- at least, in cruise style. They choose Shadow for exquisite personalized service, spacious suites and the opportunity to travel to appealing ports in comfort and ease. Deck 11 also features the S.A.L.T. Lab, a large modern space that doubles as the spot for cooking classes and the Chef’s Table dining experience. The ceilings are extra high, and doors can be opened to the fresh air, which makes it inviting for either experience. Adjacent to that is the S.A.L.T. Bar, where bartenders create innovative craft cocktails inspired by the destinations the ship visits using local spirits.
I thought our recipes were simple, fashioning chick pea and salted cod salad, and scrambled eggs with salt cod and crisp potatoes, yet our Portuguese instructor fascinated by explaining her culinary culture. Fellow passengers are largely from the US, but as many as half might originate from Europe and other countries. Silver Endeavour possesses a PC6 ice-class rating, one of the industry's highest, and advanced exploration technology, including a remotely operated underwater vehicle and a remote gimbal camera system. Come winter, ships head to the always-sunny Caribbean, as well as summery Australia, New Zealand, South America and Asia. Golfers can sign up with the pro onboard for individual lessons utilizing a high-tech swing analyzer and attend complimentary golf clinics or participate in a putting contest.
Amenities aren't trendy -- no Nespresso machines in every suite, for instance, all the rage with some luxury lines. Silversea sticks to Illy espresso-makers (this is an Italian line, after all) and only in the biggest suites. About as cutting-edge as Silver Whisper gets are the complimentary magazines and newspapers you can read on smartphones and tablets by downloading a Silversea app.
We liked the 5-star experience we enjoyed with Silversea Expeditions. Just know that our expedition cruise with Silversea Expeditions exceeded our expectations in every way. The fitness center is well-appointed with modern Technogym equipment and was never crowded during my sailing. There are daily complimentary group fitness classes, from yoga and Pilates to aerobics and circuit training.
